Remove the line that has gs.apple.com completely and save host file on your host system.

Please use the following the instructions depending on your system

On Mac:

* Open Finder
* Hold down COMMAND + SHIFT keys and press 'G'
* Enter "/private/etc/" in the field and press "Go"
* Find "hosts" file in the directory
* Drag the file to your desktop
* Open it in text editor
* Remove the line that has gs.apple.com entirely or put a # at the beginning of it to comment it out
* Save the file
* Drag it back to the /private/etc/ folder.
* You'd need to enter your username and password to authenticate the move

On Windows:

  • Locate the hosts file in one of the following directories:
Windows 95/98/Me c:\windows\hosts
Windows NT/2000/XP Pro c:\winnt\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
Windows XP, Vista, 7 c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

  • Right click and click on "Open With..." and then click on "Notepad" on the list.
Remove the line that has gs.apple.com completely and save the file.

restart your itunes.

This should work fine but you will lose all music, photos, videos and books :S

there are 2 lines,
74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com
#127.0.0.1 gs.apple.com

ive tried deleting the first one, restore, didnt work. i put the first one back, and delete the second one, didnt work. I tried with both and without both, didnt work. I tried taking the # sign out to uncomment it, but it didnt work. keep getting error 1013

this lines are basically there to guide your machine to find gs.apple.com.

now in human language you don't need any of these as your machine will figure out this site by it self (using DNS)

my question is did you restart your itune after removing this line and saving this file (hosts)

Do i have to buy a new iphone 4 and computer?

what I mean is you just need to restart itunes software.

steps:

1. close itunes if running.
2. modify and save the hosts file
3. run itunes
4. do update.

deleted gs.apple.com right after 74.208.10.249. Worked flawlessly for me to upgrade to 4.3.1 from 4.2.1 on iPhone 4. Thanks!!!!!
